Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a decentralized computing platform and cryptocurrency that is open source. It was introduced in 2016 as an alternate option to the Ethereum network. Similar to Ethereum, Ethereum Classic supports smart contract functionality and facilitates the creation and utilization of decentralized applications (DApps).
Ethereum Classic’s existence can be traced back to the 2016 Ethereum DAO hack, which led to a split in the Ethereum blockchain. The current Ethereum network is the result of this fork, while Ethereum Classic continues on the original chain where the DAO hack transpired. Following the hack, the community held a vote. While most of the Ethereum DAO community decided to shift to a new forked blockchain, a subset insisted on preserving the original network, adhering to the principle of “Code is Law”.
Staying on the blockchain would have meant investors enduring the financial fallout from the DAO. However, a bailout was initiated and investors were compensated by transitioning to the new blockchain.
Despite their divergent paths, Ethereum Classic and Ethereum share a great deal in common. For example, like Ethereum, Ethereum Classic can issue ERC-20 standard tokens. However, Ethereum Classic does not support updates made to the Ethereum network, such as the Ethereum Merge.
Ethereum Classic sticks with the Proof-of-work blockchain consensus model, while Ethereum has transitioned to Proof-of-stake in the second stage of a three-stage Merge expected to conclude later in 2023.

FAQ
ETC started off technically similar to ETH, except for the way the DAO hack transactions were processed.
However, since its inception, there have been modifications in its tokenomics, with members voting in December 2017 to set a limit on the supply of ETC. Consequently, the maximum supply is established at 210,700,000 ETC, which is approximately ten times the supply of BTC, while ETH doesn’t have a supply limit.
ETC employs a PoW mining algorithm, akin to Bitcoin — miners compete with each other to validate the blockchain and are rewarded with new coins for their efforts.

BTD stands for “buying the dip,” one of the popular strategies many traders swear by. Essentially, this means purchasing a coin after its value has taken a temporary hit. While this might seem counterintuitive to some, it can actually be a smart move. By buying in at a lower price point, you’ll be able to accumulate more of the coin and increase your potential gains when the price eventually rebounds.
Bitsgap has made things remarkably easier for those who wish to dip-buy by incorporating the popular strategy into its algorithmic automated trading bot, which is also known as BTD. This handy tool can help you take advantage of price drops by automatically purchasing the base currency for your chosen pair when the price is decreasing. Not only does this make the process more efficient, but it can also help you achieve a lower average cost of ownership for your coins.
