TrueUSD (TUSD) is an ERC-20 stablecoin that was introduced on the Ethereum mainnet in 2018. Its primary function is linked to its central aim: to maintain a value closely pegged to the US dollar.
TUSD is said to be backed by USD held in escrow in bank accounts owned by Trust Companies. It is also reportedly the first digital asset independently verified to have a 1:1 peg with the US dollar. Following the Ethereum Merge, TUSD transactions are authenticated using a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.
TrustToken, the San Francisco-based firm behind the creation and launch of TUSD, set up the ecosystem to ensure that all funds were confirmed through a network of multiple escrow accounts.
Trust Companies, responsible for managing the various accounts holding the collateralized funds, are required to disclose the value of these funds daily and conduct monthly audits. This procedure was devised to mitigate the risk of TUSD being hacked or stolen, and to offer TUSD holders legal safeguards against such incidents.
