Is Uptober Over? Bitcoin Is 36% Off Its High in October 2026
Bitcoin slid to about $80,000 on October 15, 2026, 36% below its all-time high, after US inflation came in above forecast. What October has done in past years, what moved the market this week, and how DCA and BTD bots trade a fall without guessing the bottom.

October 2026 hasn't followed the "Uptober" meme so far. On October 15, Bitcoin fell to about $80,000, roughly 36% below its all-time high of $126,210 from October 6, 2025, after US inflation came in above forecast. About $1 billion in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours. The month isn't over, and the next big date is the Fed decision on October 28.
What happened on October 15

Why is Bitcoin down this October?
Three things hit at once.
Inflation surprised to the upside. September CPI rose 0.6% in the month and 3.7% over the year, above the 3.6% consensus. Gasoline, up 9.1% in the month, drove more than half the jump. After the Fed's September hike, a hotter print raised the odds of another one at the October meeting.
Leverage was crowded on the long side. Traders who bet on a seasonal rally held leveraged longs into the release. When price broke below $82,000, their stop losses and liquidations sold into a thin order book and pushed it lower. Most of the roughly $1 billion liquidated came from longs.
Price reached a level big holders watch. The average purchase price of US spot ETF holders sits near $81,500. Price has bounced near that level several times, and on October 16 it held again.
None of this says where Bitcoin goes next. It explains why a month with a friendly nickname turned red.
Is Uptober real?
"Uptober" comes from a real streak. Between 2013 and 2024, Bitcoin closed October higher in every year except 2014 and 2018. Then October 2025 ended lower, the first negative October since 2018, even though the all-time high came in the first week of that month.

A streak in past calendars describes what happened. It doesn't set what happens next. Inflation, rate expectations, ETF flows and leverage decide a month, and in 2026 all four leaned the other way. Trading a meme with 20x leverage is how a normal dip becomes a liquidation. Crypto Liquidations Explained shows how leveraged positions get wiped out in a move like this.
How bots trade a falling market
Nobody knows whether $80,000 is the bottom. Two bot types are built so they don't need to know.

A worked example: start a DCA bot at $82,000 with four averaging orders spaced 3% apart. They sit near $79,540, $77,150, $74,840 and $72,600. If price only revisits $80,000 and bounces, one order fills and the take profit sits close to the current price. If price falls to the September low near $75,000, three orders fill and the bot needs a smaller bounce than a single entry at $82,000 would. If price keeps falling past the last order, the bot holds a loss until it recovers or the stop loss closes it.
That's the honest trade-off. A DCA bot doesn't avoid drawdowns; it decides in advance how to act inside one. What Is a DCA Bot? explains how to size the averaging ladder.
What to check before October 28
- Leverage. Fed days move price fast in both directions. Would your position survive a 10% wick?
- Averaging budget. If every order fills, is the total still money you can leave in the market for weeks?
- Stop loss. Decide where the idea is wrong before the decision, not during the candle. In a fast market a stop fills below its trigger; How to Choose Crypto Trading Bot Settings covers where to place it.
- Timing. The statement comes at 18:00 UTC on October 28. A new bot launched with a market order minutes before it pays the widest spread of the day.
- Weekends. If you hold through Saturday and Sunday, liquidity is thinner. Liquidation Cascades Explained shows how one forced sale triggers the next.
