FAQ

An example of a stop limit order is if you are holding Bitcoin at $30,000 and want to sell if the price drops to $28,500, but only if you can get at least $28,400. You would set a stop price at $28,500 and a limit price at $28,400. When the price hits $28,500, your limit sell order is triggered, but it will only execute if the market can match $28,400 or better. If the price falls too quickly past $28,400, the order may not fill.
The difference lies in execution and price control. A Stop Loss order (stop market) triggers a market order once the stop price is reached, meaning it will fill at the next available price, regardless of slippage. A Stop Limit order triggers a limit order once the stop price is hit, but it will only fill at your specified limit price or better. Stop Loss prioritises execution, while Stop Limit prioritises price precision but carries a risk of not filling if the market moves too fast.
Imagine you have opened a short position on Ethereum (ETH) at $2,500, expecting the price to fall. To protect against an unexpected upward spike, you could set a stop price at $2,550 and a limit price at $2,560. If ETH rises to $2,550, your limit buy order would activate, closing your short at $2,550 or better, but not higher than $2,560. This helps you cap your losses on a short position if the market turns against you.
Stop Limit orders typically remain active until they are either executed or manually cancelled. On platforms like Bitsgap, you can also set an expiry time if you want your stop limit order to automatically cancel after a certain period. If no expiry is set, the order stays pending in the order book until triggered or cancelled.
