Realcoin was first released in 2014 as a second-layer cryptocurrency token built on top of Bitcoin's network. Shortly afterward, it was renamed USTether and then USDT. Later updates allowed USDT to function on the Ethereum, Tron, Algorand, EOS, and OMG blockchains in addition to Bitcoin's.
The idea behind Tether is to combine the freedom and decentralization of cryptocurrencies with the relative stability of the U.S. dollar.
